Rat Problem
rat problem, how to deal with it
Rats and mice are vermin, they spread disease, they are a general nuisance, so what can you do?
Rat poison
You can put down rat poison but this needs to be some
where dry, i.e under a shed or similar, or you can make a rain proof
shelter, this stops the poison getting wet
 |
|
This poison shelter is made from a simple semi-rigid
plastic sheet held together in an arch shape by white sticky
tape (so you can see the tape) |
The only downside to rat poison is that it does not kill
the rat instantly and the rat will undoubtedly carry on about its way and
die some where else, also if it dies indoors the smell will be terrible,
and it has then been known for other rats to come along
and eat the dead rat.
Traps
There
are several types of trap, some will catch the rat or mouse alive for you
to release elsewhere, but all you are doing is giving the problem to some
one else (What if they do it to you?)
The best option is
a rat trap that kills the rat or mouse
 |
|
The trap on the left is a rat trap The trap on the right is a
mouse trap |
Contrary to popular belief you should not use cheese to
bait the trap with, that is for cartoons, instead use a piece of fruit,
cake or chocolate
 |
|
Yes its an old trap, but here it is baited with a biscuit / cake,
other good baits are small slice of M**s bar (it sticks to the trap)
or segment of Satsuma. Never use cheese, unless the mouse is
called "Jerry". vermin are NOT partial to Cheese |
Ideally you should have 2 traps side by side, each with
the bait at opposite ends, so that which ever way the rat / mouse comes it
will get the bait and ......
The traps should be placed
near a wall with the baited end close to the wall as they tend to follow these, its rare but not uncommon for a
rat to run across somewhere.
Do not let any pets into
the area where you have traps, If you have pets put the traps down at
night not in the room where the rats are.
